Adopting a Pet from the MSPCA

If your family is ready for a new pet, a great way to find one is through one of the MSPCA's adoption centers. There are seven located throughout Massachusetts, including one in Boston.

Before you decide to adopt a pet, make sure your family is ready for the commitment. Consider the ongoing financial costs involved in caring for a pet. Also consider the size of your home, time investment needed to train the animal, and the enthusiasm level of other members of the household.

Once you have decided that pet adoption is for you, you can contact the MSPCA at (617) 522-5055, or visit them online at www.mspca.org.

When you arrive at the adoption center be sure to have paperwork with you verifying your residence. If you rent, the center may contact your landlord to verify that there are no pet restrictions.

The MSPCA website estimates that the adoption procedure will take approximately one hour. They suggest that you spend your time getting to know the available animals, and they suggest bringing all family members to make sure that everyone is compatible. Keep in mind that there are fees involved in adopting. The fees vary depending on the type of animal, and cover various health-care related costs.
