The ABCs of Hiring a Contractor
So, you need some work done on your house? If you own a home, at some point this will be an issue for you. How are you going to find the right person for the job? There are many ways to go about finding and hiring a contractor. Here are just a few ideas to get you started.
ASK around. If your neighbor just had a new deck put on and it looks great, ask them for the carpenter's name and number. Ask co-workers, friends, and customers if they can recommend someone. Most good contractors get new business by word of mouth referrals.
BE resourceful. If you have several names, advertisements, or business cards, do some research. A great place to do your research is on the internet. If any of the contractors have a website, check out their portfolio page and their testimonials page. You can also check to see if they are licensed.
Get a signed CONTRACT. You should always obtain a written estimate/contract from your contractor. If any part of the contract is unclear be sure to ask questions. Most likely the contract will contain a clause that allows for adjustments in the event of unforeseen complications.
