Don't Mess Around With Lead Paint
If your home was built before 1978, you may have lead paint present in your home. Lead paint exposure can harm children by causing illness, learning disabilities and other brain injuries.
Contrary to popular myth, most children do not munch on lead paint chips (although some do). Often children are exposed to lead through paint 'dust' generated when homeowners do remodeling projects. Lead exposure can also come from contaminated soil, as well as older mini-blinds. Other sources of lead poisoning are toys, playgrounds, and jewelry (most of these are regulated, but beware of older ones, and check consumer recalls.
If your home was built prior to 1978 and you plan to undertake any major remodeling or redecorating projects, consult a licensed lead abatement contractor first. If you suspect your child has been exposed to lead, talk to your pediatrician, who can run tests, and advise you on how to proceed.
