The Red Hat Society
The Red Hat Society has many chapters, and most likely there is one in your community. Each chapter has a charming name, such as the “Red Hat Rowdies” of Billerica.
The Society was started by a woman in California, after reading the poem "Warning” (also commonly known as “When I Am an Old Woman”) by Jenny Joseph. To read at least part of the poem, visit www.wheniamanoldwoman.com, or look for a copy at your local library or book store.
The key purpose of the Society is to “greet middle age with verve, humor and élan”. Basically, the Society consists of various groups of women who want to get together and have fun! You can join an existing chapter or start your own. There is a seemingly “loose” rule that to be a “red hatter” you must be a woman of at least 50. However, there are also “Pink Hatters” under 50, who wear pink hats with lavender outfits, rather than the red with purple.
